Calm Your Jitters With Sedation Dentistry

Do you avoid going to the dentist because of anxiety or fear? Then you might want to consider sedation dentistry to calm your jitters. Click here to learn more.

Regular dental visits are important for preventing cavities, gum disease, and tooth loss. But it’s estimated that as many as 20% of adults avoid going to the dentist because of fear or anxiety.

We get it. At True Dentistry Plus in Pembroke Pines, Florida, our caring and experienced dentist, Dr. Carmen D. Ramirez Gonzalez, has a solution for those who struggle coming in for dental care because of their fears.

With conscious sedation dentistry, we provide medications during your visit that help you feel calm and relaxed.

So, what is sedation dentistry and how can it get you into the dentist’s chair? Here, we want to tell you all about it.

Conscious sedation dentistry

Conscious sedation dentistry is a type of medication that helps you stay calm and relaxed during dental care. It’s a mild type of sedative so you’re awake the whole time, but without the fear and anxiety.

We offer two types of conscious sedation.

Nitrous oxide

Nitrous oxide, also called laughing gas, is a sedative you breathe in. The gas works within minutes, and we adjust your dose as needed during your dental care. Once we’re done, we have you breathe in pure oxygen, which flushes out the nitrous oxide gas.

Oral conscious sedation

Oral conscious sedation is a pill we give you at the office about an hour before your treatment. You might feel tired and fall asleep with oral sedation, but you wake up easily and can still communicate with us when undergoing oral care.

Who benefits from sedation dentistry

Anyone who avoids going to the dentist because of overwhelming fear benefits from sedation dentistry.

Taking care of your teeth is vital to overall health and well-being. And making regular visits to the dentist reduces your risk of developing complicated dental problems that may require serious dental work.

In addition to fear and anxiety, you may benefit from sedation dentistry if you have:

  • A sensitive gag reflex
  • Very sensitive teeth
  • A difficult time sitting still
  • Claustrophobia
  • A fear of needles

Before recommending sedation dentistry to any of our patients, we do a thorough evaluation. We review your medical history and the types of medications you take.

We’ve helped many patients get the dental care they need with sedation dentistry, but safety is our No. 1 priority.

Keeping it safe

Conscious sedation dentistry is safe when given by an experienced and skilled dentist like Dr. Ramirez Gonzalez.

Before we start, we talk to you about the medication and how it works. We also ask about any new medications you’re taking. Some drugs don’t work well with conscious sedation.

Once we complete your dental work, we let you relax for a bit at the office and monitor you. We then send you home. When using sedation dentistry, we request that you arrange to have someone drive you home after your dental care. Though some medications wear off right away, we want to keep you safe.

Don’t let your fears keep you from getting the dental care you need to take care of your teeth. If you have anxiety about going to the dentist, we can help. Call our office at 954-441-8778 or contact us online today to learn more about our sedation dentistry.
